Other Places I've Been

After I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1983, I travelled around the U.S. a good deal and a bit overseas. I shot a lot of Kodachrome slides in that pre-digital age. I'm scanning some of my old slides and posting them here. These pages are for pics from places I've been that weren't on my Appalachian Trail Hike.

The spring following my Appalachian Trail hike, I took a long bus ride to Seattle, where I rented an economy car and drove down the Pacific Coast Highway and sometimes even smaller coastal roads to San Francisco.

A scenic stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in northern California. My budget rental car just below. Morning fog still burning off over the ocean and the immediate seacoast. March 1984.

Standing atop the seacliff above a driftwood-covered beach along the Pacific coast of Washington. March 1984.

Some riverside pasturelands on the Pacific Coast Highway in Washington, with the Cascade Range in the background. Also March 1984.

Humbug Mountain from the south. An impressive headland and a scenic spot from which to view it. Southern Oregon coast, March 1984.

A stormy day along the Pacific Coast of Oregon. March 1984. Very sharp eyes can pick out several sandpipers checking out what the most recent wave left behind for them.

Coastal wetlands further south along the Oregon coast. The sun burns through for a few minutes. The rain let up a bit but did not stop.

Driftwood on an Oregon beach, March 1984.

A lagoon among the sand dunes. Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, March 1984.

My drive along the northern California coast was stormy, but there were some bright spots.

Just a short stretch along the cliffs from the pic above.

One more. Northern California coast driving the Pacific Coast Highway in March 1984.

Back up north in Washington state. Rainy pasturelands on the Pacific Coast Highway, with the Cascade Range in the background. March 1984.

That driftwood-covered beach again. Along the Pacific coast of Washington. March 1984.

Same driftwood-covered beach along the Pacific coast of Washington. March 1984.

When it does rain in the desert, plants are quick to take advantage. This is the Sonoran Desert in western Arizona from April 1984. Unusual winter rains had covered the landscape with new growth.
